The Lunch Box—Midday and evening meals

  • The Lunch Box, open 11-1 for lunch, 3-4:30 for an after school program and then 5-7 for dinner, provides over 500 meals a day. They are open Monday-Friday, even on holidays, to make sure that all Poughkeepsie residents are able to enjoy a decent meal.
  • Some meals they love to serve are pizza (pizza day), soup & sandwiches, hotdogs, venison (donated from local hunters), and an array of desserts provided by Hannaford.
  • Some major supporters of the project include ShopRite, Panera Bread, Hannaford, and local pizzerias who save their pies to donate to the lunch box.
  • The Lunch Box strives to maintain is a nutritious diet for all individuals, considering that this will most likely be their only meal for the day.
  • They feed, on average, 200 people each day.
  • There are only approximately ten full-time employees of The Lunch Box, and the rest are volunteers. Volunteers include Marist students, Vassar students, Culinary Institute students who help cook the meals, athletes and clubs, local residents and churches, and homeschooled children looking to fulfill community service. Volunteers help cook and serve food, as well as interact with the people.
  • In 2013, Lunch Box programs served over 110,000 meals, with more than 250 people each day receiving nutritious sustenance.
